Early Life

Margaret Constance Williams was born in Bristol. She is mostly called “Maisie” after the figure from the British comic strip The Perishers.

Maisie went to Clutton Essential School and Norton Slope School in Midsomer Norton, before relocating to Bath Dance College to study Performing Arts. She did not sit her GCSEs, even in spite of the fact that she was anticipated to pick up high grades.

Maisie’s Love for Dance

For Williams, acting was only a side interest for many years. Her first love was always dancing.

Before auditioning for Game of Thrones, Maisie took many neighborhood dance classes and even enlisted at Bath Dance College (BDC)—a performing arts school in the southwest of Britain.

She says her dance education at BDC helps her with stunt work she does on the shows.

Williams also claims that had she not won the role of Arya in Game of Thrones, she would have pursued dancing full time.

In a 2016 interview with The Guardian, she said she’d “probably be living in London in someone’s spare room attempting to be a dancer and getting by on nothing.”

Despite being a central figure to one of the greatest television shows of all time, Williams claims she would still give up on acting if the dance was a choice for her. “If I could have had a career in dancing, I would have left acting in a moment. Like that,” she said.

Arya Stark quotes from Game of Thrones

Essos is East. Westeros is West, but what’s West of Westeros?

I know Death. He’s got many faces. I look forward to seeing this one.

A bruise Is a lesson… and each lesson makes us better.

Leave one wolf alive and the sheep are never safe.

Tell them the North remembers.

All of you better run or my brother will kill you, he’s a Stark. He’s more wolf than man, and so am I.

I am a wolf and will not be afraid.

Our stories aren’t over yet.

Now, are you going to let me by, or do I have to smack you on the ear to help you with your hearing?

Nothing isn’t better or worse than anything. Nothing is just nothing.

The world doesn’t just let girls decide what they want to be. But I can now.

Swift as a deer. Quiet as a Shadow. Fear cuts deeper than swords.

I wasn’t playing. And I don’t want to be a lady.

Maisie Williams quotes

I like ‘Glee’ a lot. It’s kind of like my guilty pleasure.

I once had someone say to me in an interview, ‘You are more ugly on the screen than in real life.’

You sometimes know when you’re in a really bad mood, and you’re not sure why? That’s how I get sometimes.

I guess I’m a bit of a tomboy and can be quite resourceful.

I talk to myself quite a lot, and when things get stressful, I just tell myself to breathe.

On her love of dance

I’ve never really done acting before, ’cause dancing was my first love. And then, I sort of fell into it from a talent competition and never really looked back.

Maisie Williams quotes about Game of Thrones

People are like, ‘What’s Game of Thrones about?’ I’m like, ‘It’s in the title.’ For real, this is a game for the Iron Throne. No matter what character you are, you’re sucked into that at some point.

When you’re filming, it’s very different from what you see on screen.

She’s feisty, a bit of a rebel, a tomboy, she is also quite brave and quick thinking, she wants to be listened to but sees everything very black and white… a bit like me really!

I feel like I’ve grown up extremely quickly working on ‘Game of Thrones’. I’m now working in an adults’ world at sixteen… I can fly all the way to Northern Ireland, but I can’t book into a hotel because I’m still in my early teens. It’s like this weird limbo where half of me is, like, ‘Grow up!’ and the other half is, like, ‘You’re still a child’.

It’s never black and white on ‘Game of Thrones.’ If you think it’s black and white, you’re watching it wrong.

On women’s rights and girl power

I feel like we should stop calling feminists’ feminists’ and just start calling people who aren’t feminist ‘sexist’ – and then everyone else is just human.

On her childhood

I was quite weird in school, I think people were scared of me because I was really, really hyper. I had a few friends, but I was never the popular one or the pretty girl…One of the reasons I love ‘Game of Thrones’ is because it’s about finding out who your real friends are, and sometimes that takes a very long time to realize.

Maisie’s thoughts on her career

Not a lot of people have jobs that they’re really comfortable with, but I’m one of those people. I feel like I’m the luckiest girl on earth, and that’s such a lovely feeling.

So many of my friends have been like, “Oh I’m not allowed to go off and do that cause I need to get a ‘Plan B.'” And I understand that, but we spend so much time trying to figure out our “Plan B” that we never really fully pursue our “Plan A.”

People ask me, ‘Isn’t it scary living on your own?’ but in this industry, being at events, doing interviews, and doing promotion and constantly chatting about yourself, sometimes it’s really nice just to take a day where you can sleep in until 3 P.M. and then stay up as late as you like.

There are moments you’re just broken as a human and just want to cry.

On fame

People really want to see what I’m up to, and that’s crazy. It’s a really lovely feeling—it’s kind of scary, but a good scary. It’s a lovely position to be in.

Maisie Williams quotes about her image

I like shocking people just because, like, I can wear a dress, too. Not even for people to go, ‘Oh she’s grown up,’ but to show people that I’m actually a girl.

If you’ve got cool nails, you wake up, and you’re like, ‘Oh, I’m happy now.’

It’s not like I’ve ever been the popular pretty girl at school or anything. I was always such a weirdo.

On friendship

Sometimes you miss friends, and it’s hard for them, as well, when you’re just gone for a long time. I can’t just go and see them any time I want because when I’m free, they may not be free, but I definitely wouldn’t change it, ever. But, when you find really great friends, that doesn’t matter, and I’m lucky to have some people who really, really look after me and look out for me. I definitely wouldn’t ever change it.

When I was in primary school, my best friend was a boy, and we always goofed around, climbed trees, got holes in my trousers and muddied all my tops and things like that; a complete nightmare for the washing, but great fun.

On Maisie’s friendship with Sophie Turner

Ms. Sophie Turner. My best friend, indeed. It’s been so nice having someone of a similar age — and gender — to go through this crazy life together, because it is really strange growing up in front of the public. To have someone in the darkest times that you can call, that knows exactly what you’re going through … just keeps you sane.

It’s nice to have her going through this industry and someone who just completely gets it. It’s really lovely to have someone hold my hand through all of it. She’s like my big sister.

I can’t tell you the number of times Sophie said, ‘Go to therapy,’ before I actually did. She really helped me through some messy break-ups and some friend break-ups. Whenever I’m like, ‘I need help! This is bigger than anything I can sort out on my own,’ Sophie is my point of call. I think therapy is so important. You should absolutely speak to someone, even if in your head you go, ‘Yeah, I knew that!’

Her best friend

I thought Sophie was the coolest thing I’d ever seen. I get why they do chemistry reads because when it’s right, it’s so right. Like, we’re best friends. And they could see that all those years ago, and it must have been real magic watching these two girls have the best time together.

It’s funny because she’s so not like Sansa in real life. She’s a great lass, and we both like the same things. And then on screen, we have our little arguments and things, so you get to see a different side of each other. In real life, I’ve never seen the side of Sophie, where she says, ‘Oh, you’re an idiot.’ But I didn’t find it difficult to hate Sophie on screen — I mean, I love her to pieces — but I didn’t find it a challenge, really, as an actress.

On social media

I haven’t done Vine in a long time, and when I first started, I just did stuff that I thought was funny.

Maisie’s quotes about relationships and dating

I’d never want to be trapped. I never like to stay in one place for too long. I always flit around, I never settle anywhere. So being married would be being trapped.

Sexuality in girls isn’t explored as much as it should be. Everyone gets freaked out – it’s quite a taboo thing for girls to wanna have sex.

Maisie Williams words of wisdom

No one is born evil; it’s just the choices that they make.

If you have downtime at school and people are bullying you, they don’t know you. They don’t have the right to have an opinion on you.

I’d much rather be liked because people realize that I’m standing up for myself.

People go down bad paths, and they make bad decisions, but it’s always justified in their heads.

Someone once told me that if you respect a person, listen to their opinion. And if you do not respect someone, then do not listen to their opinion. And that works both ways.

People don’t always do what they say they’re going to do.

Best friend Sofie Turner quotes about Maisie

Maisie is definitely my protector, and I’m hers, too. I know if anything happened — especially if it was on ‘Game Of Thrones,’ which it never, ever would — she’d go crazy and protect me. To have a sister there, a woman who gets how degrading and awful it can be, and how you’re expected to be so submissive in your work, can be very comforting. Maisie is my strong home.

People always think Maisie and I are a couple. I mean, I am obsessed with her, so you never know. She’s my drug. I’ve got an addiction to Maisie Williams. I actually stalk her hashtag on Instagram!

We’ve helped each other through a lot of mental health problems, especially around body image. She’s been my crutch in that, and I’ve been hers because it seems everything she goes through, I go through. You know when girls are together a long time, their periods sync up? It’s like our emotions and personalities sync up, too.

I’ve always seen Maisie as this rebellious, cool kid, while I’m more passive-aggressive, or else just passive. I hate that about myself, and I love that Maisie is just who she is. We spent the past five years basically sharing a hotel room (even though we each had our own), having endless sleepovers, lots of line rehearsals, and lots of food and messing about, too.

On working together

We’re kind of like loners on ‘Game of Thrones’ just because the past few seasons Maisie and I have sleepovers every night when we’re shooting or every night whenever both of us are in town! We just used to sit there and eat and watch stupid videos and smoke weed. I don’t know if my publicist will kill me for saying this! We’d get higher, and then we’d sit in the bath together, and we’d rub makeup brushes on our faces. It’s fun!

Our first scene together was our reunion scene, and we messed up so many times. We couldn’t keep a straight face! Our relationship is so close, but it’s only that fun side, never the business side. I was nervous. It just terrified me. It’s like performing for your mom. When somebody is watching, you don’t do it quite as well. But in the long run, I think it benefits us because we can be free with each other in our acting. We’re not afraid to go there with each other because we feel so comfortable around each other.
