Let’s start with one of the most popular songs ever recorded with a day of the week in the title. It’s so good, they named it twice!

1. Monday songs

“Monday, Monday” by The Mamas & The Papas

Album: If You Can Believe Your Eyes And Ears
Year: 1966

The Mamas & The Papas debut album captured the popular 1960’s folk-rock sound with the band’s groovy, radio-friendly harmonies. Their album “If You Can Believe Your Eyes And Ears” is credited with four hit singles, including “California Dreaming” and “Monday, Monday” and ranks among Rolling Stone magazine’s 500 greatest albums of all time.

According to band member and songwriter John Phillips, “Monday, Monday” is about what a downer it is to end a fun weekend and start the new work week. It only took him 20 minutes to write. But his bandmates Mama Cass, Michelle Phillips, and Denny Doherty were reportedly unimpressed with the song. “Nothing about it stood out to me,” Doherty said.

“Monday, Monday” is the group’s only song to ever reach #1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. In the U.K., it took the #3 spot.

2. Tuesday songs

“Ruby Tuesday” by The Rolling Stones

Album: Between The Buttons
Year: 1967

The Stones’ fourth #1 hit in the United States, “Ruby Tuesday,” tells the tale of a broken relationship and heartbreak. According to legend, a split between the band’s guitarist Keith Richards and his girlfriend Linda Keith inspired the song.

Richards explained the song’s origin,” That’s one of those things—some chick you’ve broken up with. And all you’ve got left is the piano and the guitar and a pair of panties. It’s goodbye, you know. And so it just comes out of that. And after that you just build on it. It’s one of those songs that are easiest to write because you’re really right there and you really sort of mean it. And for a songwriter, hey, break his heart and he’ll come up with a good song.”

“Ruby Tuesday” rose to #1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and #3 in the U.K., and ranks among Rolling Stone magazines’ 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

“Waiting For Wednesday” by Lisa Loeb & Nine Stories

Let’s just be honest. Wednesdays are rarely inspiring enough to be song-worthy. In fact, you won’t find many songs anywhere that reference the so-called Hump Day.

Among the best we could find is Lisa Loeb’s contribution to the pantheon of songs about days of the week, called “Waiting For Wednesday.” It’s about a girl in a bad relationship who may be pregnant. She waits nervously for the results of a pregnancy test and ponders leaving her boyfriend.

The pop princess’ song reached #83 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts—and to no one’s surprise that is the highest any song has made the list with “Wednesday” in the title.

4. Thursday songs

“Thursday’s Child” by David Bowie

Album: Hours…
Year: 1999

As a young boy, David Bowie read the autobiography of cabaret singer Eartha Kitt. Her book from 1958, titled “Thursday’s Child,” left an impression on the young lad from London that stayed with him his whole life and inspired this song’s title.

Bowie wrote “Thursday’s Child,” along with much of the material on his “Hours…” album, for use in the “Omikron: The Nomad Soul” video game. Along with this musical contribution, the rock star even made a couple of cameo appearances in the adventure game.

“Thursday’s Child” gained popularity in his homeland, reaching as high as #16 on the U.K. chart.

5. Friday songs

“Friday I’m In Love” by The Cure

Album: Wish
Year: 1992

Robert Smith and The Cure broke the mold with “Friday I’m In Love.” The band’s lead singer, known for his goth persona and dark, moody music, takes an upbeat and optimistic approach with the song.

“[It’s] a dumb pop song, but it’s quite excellent actually, because it’s so absurd. It’s so out of character—very optimistic and really out there in happy land. It’s nice to get that counterbalance. People think we’re supposed to be leaders of some sort of ‘gloom movement.’ I could sit and write gloomy songs all day long, but I just don’t see the point,” he explained to Spin magazine.

This poppy diversion from The Cure’s usual fare earned them their second-biggest hit after “Lullaby.” “Friday I’m In Love” peaked at #6 in the U.K. and #18 on the U.S. charts.

6. Saturday songs – Songs About Days Of The Week:

“Saturday Night’s Alright (For Fighting)” by Elton John

Album: Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Year: 1973

Elton John’s “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” is regarded as one of the best rock albums of all time and includes four hit singles. “Saturday Night’s Alright” was the lead single released from the record.

As songwriter Bernie Taupin explained, the song is his “first attempt to write a rock and roll song that was totally English.” It describes his years growing up in England and hanging out at dance clubs where fights often broke out.

“Saturday Night’s Alright (For Fighting)” rose to #7 in the U.K. and #12 in the United States. It helped propel the songwriting duo’s double LP album to over 30 million copies sold worldwide and earned it a spot on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

7. Sunday songs

“Sunday Morning Coming Down” by Johnny Cash

Album: The Johnny Cash Show
Year: 1970

Johnny Cash made “Sunday Morning Coming Down” famous when he sang it live at the Ryman Auditorium for his TV show, “The Johnny Cash Show.” A recording of the performance appeared on the soundtrack LP and was also issued as a single.

The song, written by Kris Kristopherson, earned Cash the Country Music Association Award for Song of the Year (1970) and it topped the country charts at #1.

At the time he wrote the song, Kristopherson was a relatively unknown songwriter. In order to get his work in front of Johnny Cash, he flew a helicopter (from the National Guard) to Cash’s house and landed it on the front lawn to hand over a tape of the song. “It was… kind of an invasion of privacy that I wouldn’t recommend,” Kristopherson admitted.
