Date: 1970

Joni Mitchell’s hit song “Big Yellow Taxi” is inspired by her first trip to Hawaii. After a taxi dropped her off at the hotel, she threw open the curtains to a breathtaking view of verdant mountains and blue skies. “Then, I looked down and there was a parking lot as far as the eye could see, and it broke my heart… this blight on paradise,” she told the Los Angeles Times.

3. Blue – “Tangled Up in Blue” by Bob Dylan

Album: Blood On The Tracks
Date: 1975

“Tangled Up in Blue” reflects the challenges and changes Bob Dylan felt as his marriage fell apart. He characterizes the song as taking “ten years to live and two years to write.”

4. Black – “Back In Black” by AC/DC

Album: Back In Black
Date: 1980

AC/DC’s album and title song served as a tribute to former lead singer Bon Scott after he passed away. The band’s new lead singer, Brian Johnson, captured the spirit of their fallen friend in the song’s lyrics and with his vocal performance.

8. Purple – “Purple Haze” by Jimi Hendrix

Album: Are You Experienced?
Date: 1967

This classic Hendrix tune features his distorted guitar-rock sound and energy that he popularized in the 1960s. A wild dream inspired Jimi to write this song. In the dream he was walking under the sea while surrounded by a purple haze, only to be saved by Jesus.

Lead singer Michael Stipe wrote this song about stories he heard growing up around Army bases. It is a fictional narrative based on the 1970s conflict in Vietnam, where the use of the chemical Agent Orange was prevalent.

Van Morrison originally intended for the famous lyrics and title of this song to be “Brown Skinned Girl,” a song about interracial love. After some consideration, he changed it to “Brown Eyed Girl” for greater acceptance by radio stations.

The Grateful Dead’s “Touch of Grey” is about aging gracefully. The song came about at a time the band was no longer young and it gave them a boost every time they played it. “…It became an anthem to us,” drummer Mickey Hart says. “It perked us up.”
